The That Luang Festival, or Boun Pha That Luang, stands as one of the most significant festivals in Vientiane, Laos, attracting both locals and international visitors.
Celebrated during the full moon of the 25th lunar month (typically November, but occasionally late October), this vibrant festival spans three to seven days and embodies the spiritual and cultural heritage of Laos.
The festivities begin with a captivating candlelit wax castle procession, or Phasat Pheung, starting the evening prior at Vat Simeuang.
The procession, filled with participants carrying flowers, candles, incense, and elaborately decorated wax castles adorned with flowers and banknotes, proceeds the following afternoon to Pha That Luang.
Dressed in traditional Lao attire, participants sing, dance, and play traditional music, adding a lively atmosphere to the journey toward the iconic stupa.
For many, presenting a wax castle at Pha That Luang symbolizes the accumulation of spiritual merit, a revered Lao tradition.
At dawn the next morning, a massive assembly gathers at Pha That Luang to offer alms to hundreds of monks who have traveled from across Laos, paying homage to the stupa.
Later in the day, attendees gather on the esplanade for a spirited game of Ti Khee, a sport similar to hockey, played with a curved stick and ball, symbolizing community and unity.
As night falls, the festival reaches its peak with a grand candlelight procession under the full moon, with crowds surrounding Pha That Luang in a final act of devotion. Fireworks light up the sky, marking the festival’s conclusion.
Throughout the festival, Vientiane hosts trade fairs, concerts, and amusement parks, making the That Luang Festival a must-visit event for those interested in experiencing the rich cultural tapestry of Laos.
